• Until October 18^th, 2021, passenger vehicles (M1) but also the trucks under 3.5 tons (N1) can move and tow based on what is valid until today. That is, with a towing note issued by the Transport Directorate. 

During the periodic Technical Inspection of your vehicle, they can have the hitch on the vehicle, whether it is fixed, detachable or foldable, as long as there is a towing note.  

• By October 18^th, 2021 onwards, all hitch must be replaced with detachable or folding ones in order to be removed, when they are not being towed, i.e. during the technical inspection. Also, towed vehicles must be equipped with a registration certificate and license plates.  

• So for our travels there are two cases:  
• 1^st: the detachable hitch. When not needed it should be removed. 
• 2^nd: the folding hitch. Easy to hide it under the bumper. The problem is that it cannot be screwed under any type of bumper, so in this case a Car Service expert can give us proper advice and instructions.

• Finally, in case we install a hitch in our vehicle, we must declare it to our insurance company. 

In case of an accident, our Insurance Company may not cover us if it has not been previously informed about the existence of the hitch. Also, it may not cover us if the respective special towing note has not been issued by the Ministry of Transport for our vehicle.  

• Can I disassemble the hitch out of my car and put it in another one?  

You can make the amendment if the vehicle is the same or if the hitch type has the specifications to fit into another vehicle. Many hitch parts give the appropriate mounting specifications for more than one car model and brand. If you make the change you will also need to issue a new towing note.  

• Does a hitch fit into all vehicles?  

In most cases yes. For vehicles that are rarely exempted, you should consult your manufacturer's manual or the official dealership of your car for any restrictions.  

• Who is competent to issue your towing note/ towing license?  

A towing license is issued by the respective authorities in the Region of our place of residence.
