SMOKE OR FIRE IN THE VEHICLE 23 May 2021

Vehicles can catch fire for many reasons. Mechanical or electrical issues are the most common causes also a vehicle can catch fire after a crash.

Some of the main causes of a fire to start are short circuits, either in electronic modules or in electrical wiring. Sparks are created, which under certain conditions can turn into fire. The reasons for this to happen are an asystematic maintenance, normal wear and tear of time or some other external factor.

Last but not least, another cause is overheating your brakes, especially in trucks, which can cause the tire to ignite, as well as the friction of double tires that come in contact with each other in overloaded vehicles.

Leakage of flammable liquid- fuel, engine lubricants, transmission lubricants, brake fluids - is the main cause of fire in a car, combined with the high temperatures prevailing in certain parts of the engine. Flammable fluid leaks are due to faulty or non-existent maintenance, or a plausible damage that has not been repaired.

Before a fire breaks out, it gives us a warning sign, such as smoke and the smell of a burning. If you see smoke or flame or the smell of burnt rubber or plastic, take immediate precautions.

SPECIFIC ACTIONS WE MUST TAKE IF THERE IS A FIRE IN THE CAR

  • Stop immediately at a safe point on the road, the fastest you can, as far away from other cars or crowded places, as possible.
  • Turn off the engine.
  • Evacuate all passengers- if present- from the car quickly and safely, at a distance of at least 100 meters away.  Do not go inside to a burning vehicle for any reason.
  • Open your car’s hood using the lever in the inner side of the vehicle
  • Call the Fire Department (199) and inform them accurately.
  • If the fire is low and you only see smoke, use the car fire extinguisher directly on the hearth.
  • If you have to deal with flames, step away immediately and try to extinguish the fire from a great distance, if possible, otherwise simply move away.
  • If the fire comes from the fuel tank’s location, move away immediately and secure the area around the car so that no one approaches, while waiting for the Fire Department.
  • It is very important not to open the hood of the car completely, as the air will ignite sharply and will flare up sharply. Lift the hood just a little and pose the fire extinguisher nozzle just to the gap, spraying the foam.

ACTIONS THAT PREVENT A FIRE BLAST IN A VEHICLE

  • The maintenance of your car should be executed by a professional mechanic.
  • If you spot a leak or you realize that a car is not moving properly, you should visit immediately a technician.
  • A regularly and properly maintained car is less likely to catch fire.
  • If you are going to carry petrol or small amounts of LPG inside the passenger compartment, they should be well sealed. Be sure to keep the window open for ventilation.
  • Propane throttles and bottles must never be carried in the car engine compartment.
  • Never park a car where there you see flammable materials, such as dry grass, which will come in contact with a scorching hot catalyst.
