DRIVING IN THE FOG 08 Dec 2020

Fog is a natural phenomenon that occurs in the atmosphere and consists of small water droplets from the condensation of water vapor from the atmosphere. It causes a decrease in visibility, creating problems in transportation, due to the fact that it is formed very close to the Earth's surface.

  • It is advisable to make sure that the vehicle lights as well as the fog lights work.  It is also necessary to reduce the speed of the vehicle and  always turn on the low-beam lights and the front (if any) and the rear fog lights when visibility falls below 100 meters.

Note: Running lights cause reflection, are tiring and reduce visibility.

  • Always keep safety distance, paying attention to the rear lights of the vehicle in front, but without driving right behind it, because that way we can approach it dangerously.  Overtaking is prohibited due to limited visibility.  To maintain a good course, pay constant attention to the white lines along the road.
  • Use the windscreen wipers regularly.
  • Activate the window defogging system & leave the driver window a little open which helps to defog, but it allows to hear external noises.

Note: Noise is transmitted rapidly in the fog.

  • Check the ambient temperature. Fog and rain create a light wet layer on the road surface, which in combination with low ambient temperature could form ice.
  • When visibility is non-existent, it is better to stop and when conditions allow it, to continue our journey.
  • If the need to stop occurs, pull over the car to kerb and keep it out of the road.
  • If you happen to witness an accident and there is no way to move the car out of the road, stop without turning off the lights and get off the car carefully. Probably the following car cannot brake in time.
